Save Derby Playhouse

The curtain has closed on the last performance of Treasure Island, the actors have washed away their make-up for the last time and slipped away to the bar to reminisce. Meanwhile the Derby Playhouse’s dedicated and skilled technical crew have begun the “get out” normally they would work late into the night to ensure the next production could be “fitted up” by the end of Monday morning. But tonight there will be no next show, no “fit up” the Playhouse stage will remain empty, the only sounds in it’s vast tower will be the echoes of performances past.
Future
What of the future of our theatre? The current management still intend to appeal the Arts Council decision and find alternative sources of income. But if they are unsuccessful? A civic theatre with tatty pantomimes and mass produced imported theatre? Or perhaps nothing… demolishment? The Derby City Council say they are committed to ensuring Derby made professional theatre in the theatre, if all else fails we need to hold them to that commitment.
